Many people are dreaming of getting their own guitar and learning how to play it. Some of these people want to just learn for the fun of it and others want to be in the spot light and become a famous guitar player. What ever your reason is, you too can learn to play the guitar for the fun of it.

If you really want to become good at playing the guitar, there are a few things that you need to know. You need to learn, practice, and follow the training that you have gotten yourself into or will get yourself into. You need to practice, practice, and practice more to get a good hang of it and become a pro. Some people don't realize this and give up when they feel it is too hard for them.

Some people don't have the patience or the money to hire a guitar coach who will come to their house a few times per week. A few people like to learn to play the guitar by themselves and that is perfectly fine but it would take a person weeks and even months to get the hang of the basics.

The Internet is now allowing people to learn guitar with online tutorials and videos from actual guitar teachers. No longer do you have to hire a teacher that will come to your house and pay them a high fee to learn to play the guitar.

You can go on the Internet and find many good and solid online guitar courses that will teach you how to play the guitar in less time and have fun at doing that. Guitar playing guides that are on the Internet have been around for some time now. They allow you to learn more then just the basics.

Again, you are going to have fun at the same time.

Learning to play the guitar should be a very fun thing to do for you and the people who are around you such as family members. With the Internet, you can now do all the learning from home and with some great guitar playing videos that make all the process a fun thing to do.

If you are looking for an online guitar playing tutorial and video lessons, you need to know that some of them do require a one time low fee. The cost can start at $39 and can go up to $200. Usually the low cost one involves you getting the training through the Internet. Some products that are close to the $200 mark are based on getting all the training through mail.

So there are many good guitar lessons out there online, but if you are not sure where to start then I am inviting you to visit my link below and see which program I am personally recommending. It is packed with easy-to-follow, step by step video instructions that show you how to play the guitar in great detail.

Guitar Maintenance and Prevention of Damage

Like everything made under the sun, your guitar is subject to wear and tear. There are many things that you need to take into consideration along with your guitar practice and one of such is your guitar maintenance.

There are special parts in the guitar and they all require special maintenance or else, you'll not get the most from your guitar. I will examine a few things along the lines of guitar maintenance.

As part of a good maintenance, you must store your guitar well. A lot of young guitarists seem to take this very lightly. For example, they keep their guitars in such places where they are very likely to slide off on fall.

If your guitar has fallen once, unless it is in a flight case, it is not the same guitar you bought again. I know this may seem like laying it on too thick. But believe me, this is so because anything that cause the neck of your guitar to take such impacts compromises its performance.

For no reason should you keep you guitar anywhere that it's slightly likely to fall. If you don't have very good stands, wear it with your strap or put it back in the flight case. I know you may argue that those rock stars don't do all that with their guitars. And my response is "Those stars only need to ask and several top guitar makers will make them a few guitars to their minutest specifications."

Apart from storing your guitar well, it is a good practice to always clean your guitar after every use. Pay very close attention to the fret board and the strings. You know that sweat from your hands can easily corrode most strings.

Take time to oil your guitar's tuning machine. This is especially true if your guitar uses the open tuning machine. Anything made of metal that has moving parts does better with oiling. Just make sure you drop only a little once in a while. This is not one of those tasks you should undertake on a daily basis.

These are just a few guitar maintenance tips. However, if you use them judiciously, your guitar will serve you for years and years on end.

Greatest Artists and Songs

What would current musicians be without the foundation set by the legendary bands and classic artists that came before them?

Vivian Scott at Epic Records spoke the truth when she said that "There would be no new school without the old school". The status of "Legendary" and "Classic" when it comes to music is reserved for the best of the best. Even with thousands of bands with great music, there are always those that stand out from the rest.

If you want to discuss timeless music, Chuck Berry is one of the best places to start. Berry's hit song "Johnny B. Goode" in 1958 is so well known that I doubt any of you read the song title without singing it or hearing it play out in your head. This came from the same decade that brought you "Hound Dog" by the King himself, Elvis Presley, and "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash. But don't misinterpret this as age solely defines if a song is a classic. As new generations of music are ushered in, their best artists leave their mark as well. So move forward in time and you'll find: Aretha Franklin ready to teach you a little "Respect"; Van Morrison telling you what we use to sing in "Brown Eyed Girl"; and The Who, reminding you what this time period is all about with "My Generation".

With hundreds or maybe thousands of classic songs out there, no list could do justice to the these great bands. The fact that each decade has left behind it's own legends provides that generation the ability to interpret who should be on that list. Mash-ups and songs covered by newer artist prove the ability of the current generation's ability to represent the legends that inspired them. For example DJ Danger Mouse combined artist Jay-Z's "The Black Album "with The Beatle's "The White Album" to create The Grey Album; and you've probably turned the radio up as you heard the intro to Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" only to find out that it's a covered version by The Ataris.

But don't forget, many of these bands are still alive and some of them have continued producing music. You can always pick up Guitar Hero III and battle Slash from Guns N' Roses or look up tour dates for Metallica and Sting. In the music industry, it's possible to be a living legend. Just ask The Rolling Stones what it was like to rock out with the dinosaurs when you're at their next concert.

Music was once defined as the food of the soul.

Knowing how to jump higher is definitely an asset for athletes. You will see a marked improvement in your performance after you increase your vertical jump. There are many exercises to jump higher that you will have to do on a daily basis. These include both strength training as well as power training.

Exercises To Increase Vertical Leap

A combination of strength and power training will help you to jump higher. There are many strength training exercises that strengthen your muscles. These include squats, step ups and lunges. These work simultaneously on different leg muscles like the calf and thigh muscles. It is important that you perform these exercises correctly otherwise you could risk injury.

Squats - you need to keep your back straight and feet firmly placed on the ground. It is important to remember that when you perform the squat, your knees should always be directly above your feet.

Step ups - this exercise is done with dumbbells in each hand. You must place a box in front of you and you need to step on it one leg at a time so that your knee is at a 90angle.

Lunges - with your back straight, you need to put one foot forward as far as you can until the knee in front is at a 90 degree angle. This needs to be repeated with each leg.

Power Training

Learning how to jump higher is incomplete without power training. These are exercises which involve explosive movements. Some of the power exercises that you can do are jumping rope, weighted box jumps and tuck jumps.

Jumping rope is an exercise that we all have been doing since we were kids. It is fun and a great way to improve your vertical jump.

Box jumps is pretty much like the step ups except that you have to jump up on to the box.

For tuck jumps have to jump by lifting both legs off the ground. Lift them up to your chest and land on the balls of your feet.

Doing all these exercises correctly will ensure that you learn how to jump higher in a few weeks.

Learning different exercises that teach you to jump higher are going to help you lose weight and increase muscle mass. These are two of the most important aspects to being successful in all athletic competition. Increasing your vertical jump is especially important in basketball. This will help you get more rebounds and block more shots. Improving your jumping ability is going to benefit your athletic performance and overall health.

One of the first challenges faced by the advancing guitar player is learning a core group of basic guitar chords. Why is it so important to learn these basic chords? Chords form the backbone of most rock and pop songs, and provide the harmonic accompaniment to the melody and instrumental solos.

Rhythm guitar based on basic chords provides many of the most memorable rock riffs think AC/DCs Back in Black or The Whos Wont Get Fooled Again. Whats really amazing is that by learning no more than 10 to 15 basic guitar chords, you will be equipped to play thousands of rock and pop songs!

First lets establish the definition of a chord. A chord is three or more different musical notes played together. In the case of the guitar, this means that at least three strings are strummed or plucked simultaneously to sound three or more notes. Since the guitar has six strings, the maximum numbers of notes in a guitar chord is six. All chords can be placed in one of three groups based on the musical structure of the chord: Major, Minor, or Seventh. Each of these chord groups has its own sound or feel. Major chords sound stable and complete. Minor chords can evoke a more somber or pensive mood, and Seventh chords are jazzy and somewhat incomplete sounding.

There is no standard list of basic guitar chords that every one agrees to. However, there is general agreement that there is a list of somewhere between 8 and 18 basic guitar chords (open string) that every guitarist must know cold. These chords are used in all musical styles from rock and pop to country, jazz, and classical. No matter where you are on your guitar-playing path, you should take the time to learn and master the basic chords. Getting these right will ensure you have the basic tools and skills to learn many songs and increase your playing enjoyment.

So what are the basic guitar chords? Our basic stable includes the major and minor chords from four common musical keys, A,G,C, and D. They are played as open chords, that is at least one string in the chord is not fretted (pressed down with a finger). Open chords are easier to learn and play than more advanced chords such as Barre chords, or complex chords further up the guitar neck. Our list of basic major and minor chords is:

A Major (or A), A Minor (or Am), C, D, Dm, E, Em, F, G

These chords can be best learned as chord families (by key) that can be combined into great-sounding chord sequences that make up lots of popular songs. Using this chord family approach is much more interesting and useful than just memorizing a bunch of chords in random order!

These chords grouped by chord family (key) are as follows:

A Family (Key of A): A, D, E

D Family (Key of D): D, Em, G, A

G Family (Key of G): G, Am, C, D, Em

C Family (Key of C): C, Dm, Em, F, G

Tips for Learning the Basic Chords:

1. Pick a Chord Family and master it. This will give you quick success and let you play great sounding progressions right away.

2. Use a Guitar Chord Chart as a reference tool. A chord chart shows each chord as an easy to read chord diagram with exact finger positions. See this example of a chart of basic guitar chords.

3. Find the chords and lyrics for an easy song that is based on the chord family so you can apply your skills. Many great songs are based on only three chords!

4. Ensure each string sounds right. Take care to make sure that each string is sounding clearly, and that only the strings that should be played are played.

5. Practice, practice, practice! Every day, practice continually change from one chord to another until you can do it rapidly. Learn the chord families one at a time.

6. Master all the basic chords first. Only then move on to Barre chords and other more complex chords. First things first!

7. Expand with 7th chords. As a next step you can easily expand on your basic chord knowledge by adding 7th and minor 7th chords based on the nine basic major and minor chords.

8. Have fun using your new skills! Enjoy your musical ability by applying it to learning a small set of 5-10 songs you know really well and can confidently play at any time.

The good thing about being a beginner is the internet is loaded with easy acoustic guitar tabs. Just search around and you will find them You can even find some songs that are arranged for "easy guitar". These are good because you will be able to play the songs and have them sound good.

Now they may not sound completely the same as you are used to hearing because many times the difficult parts are re-arranged to be easier to play or left out all together. This doesn't matter to the beginner acoustic guitar player. The idea here is just to learn something that will be fun to play. You can now go hang out with some friends and trade what you know with what they know.

Another good thing about easy acoustic guitar tabs is they help you to learn the basics of guitar. Learning chords and rhythms will be a lot more fun if you have a familiar song to put them to. Practicing chord exercises all the time can get a bit boring but if you are working on them in a song, chances are you will keep on practicing and then move on to more difficult stuff.

Look around at books to find "easy guitar" versions of Beatles songs or Bob Dylan songs or any others you can think of. There are tons of them. Piano players use books like this all the time.

Easy acoustic guitar tabs are also a great way to keep kids interested in music and practicing. Sometimes younger players will get bored very quickly and eventually lose all interest but if they have songs easy songs to work on, they will keep playing maybe for a lifetime. Too many times I have seen kids give up because they don't get results right away. Sometimes the only way I could get them to keep playing is to have plenty of easy acoustic guitar tabs on hand.

Having a good sense of relative pitch is essential for all singers & musicians. That's why Pure Pitch Method should be a required purchase for all aspiring singers and musicians. Pure Pitch Method is the best ear training program available. And it can be purchased & downloaded immediately online.

Pure Pitch Method helps singers & musicians develop both relative pitch and perfect pitch. This ear training program will greatly improve your singing ability and your musicianship. It is also essential for songwriting. Without being able to hear music, you can definitely not write it!

Among the skills you can develop with the Pure Pitch Method is the ability to name notes and chords by ear. It was once thought that such an ability was something that one had to be "born with." But that is now known not to be true. It can be developed but only through special techniques such as those used with the Pure Pitch Method.

Another amazing skill you'll pick up by using this software is the ability to know how to play songs on your instrument (whether it be guitar, piano, or anything else) just by hearing it! The ability to play by ear separates the amateur from the truly great musician.

A particularly great skill for those who wish to write songs is the ability to compose melodies in one's head. With Pure Pitch Method that ability can be developed. When you compose a melody in your head it's often far more interesting and catchy than if it's a melody you come to while playing your instrument or singing.

Regardless of what your interest in music is, ear training is essential take your interest to the next level.

Johnny Moon recommends Pure Pitch Method Ear Training to improve your ear.

George Winston and David Lanz - Learning How to Play Like Them

Did you know that there are two styles of New Age piano playing? One style is more percussive and staccato ala George Winston. The other, much softer and quieter. You should learn both styles! Why? Because there are times when you want to really "bang on the keys" so to speak and other times when a gentler mood takes over. Let's explore both styles and see how they're created.

First the George Winston style. When Winston came on the scene in the early 1980's, he introduced the world to a new piano style. His debut album December (still widely ordered today) put solo piano back on the map. His style, though varying throughout his career, is a percussive one, especially for new age piano. Using left hand ostinato patterns, Winston then improvises/composes melody on top.

His style was so popular that many pianists, including myself were influenced by it. To play in the Winston style, you have to learn hand independence because it's the left that sets the background. The right then comes in with improvised melody. The easiest way to learn this is to practice simple ostinato patterns first. When you can keep a pattern going in the left hand while improvising freely in the right, you're on your way.

New Age pianists David Lanz and Michael Jones made the second softer style popular. These two pianists focused more on soft textures. Especially Michael Jones. His music is just one extended improvisation usually. Lanz focused more on melody. To play in the Lanz style, it's good to know how to create or compose a melody because this is what he leads with. To do this you should know about musical phrases and how they're constructed.

Unless I see a group live, I usually don't notice that many rock drummers strictly on the basis of their recordings. The following musicians are my favorite rock drummers on record in that they either have a signature sound I love and can immediate recognize and/or play to a certain type of groove that I can recognize. In any case, their drumming to me is integral to their group's sound and would be missed if someone else was on drums. This list is based on strictly rock recordings not folk rock, straight blues, jazz, funk, soul, folk, etc. and is based on consistent recording performances for one rock group, I'm sure I left a bunch of people out that are equally deserving and included a bunch of people you either said "Huh" or "Who's he". For instance I left Ringo Starr out, and as a non-musician, I can't say the Beatles wouldn't sound like the Beatles without him, but I'm guessing many trained drummers would. Anyway, here is my list of my 10 Favorite rock drummers in alphabetical order with some brief comments and a prime example of their drumming:

Ginger Baker - Cream - His drumming to me made Cream's blues rock sound mystical "NSU" from "Fresh Cream"

Dino Danelli - The Rascals - Gave the Rascals a deep driving foot tapping fun beat. "Good Lovin'" from "The Young Rascals"

The Big Figure - Dr. Feelgood - Gave Dr. Feelgood one of the best blues rock grooves and bottom ever. "Going Back Home" from "Malpractice"

Bruce Finley - The Sorrows - You're probably going who? The Sorrows were an incredible English Freak Beat group in the 60's and Bruce's punchy "burlesque type" drums made them sound like the Rolling Stones would if they just drank and didn't use drugs with a mod drummer! "You Got What I Want" from "Take Her Heart"

Kenny Jones - The Small Faces (only) - His drums and Steve Marriot's voice and guitar gave the Small Faces a driving mod beat that couldn't be beat. Funny enough, his drumming seemed to lose something in translation when he joined the Who. "My Way of Giving" from almost any Small Faces Collection

Simon Kirke - Free - Simon's drums gave Free an incredible beat and groove. To me, Free though commercially successful, should have been the third biggest rock group ever as everyone in the group was fantastic and their songwriting was great too. Other then songwriting,l I'd rate Free, and I know this is heresy, a better group then the Beatles and the Stones. They had the greatest rock singer in the world, Paul Rodgers, one of the best and innovative Bass players ever in Andy Fraser, Paul Kossoff on guitar who played wailing single notes that bled like you couldn't believe, and of course Simon, who set the beat and groove and played incredible fills."Wishing Well" from greatest hits album

Keith Moon - The Who - Most manic rock drummer ever and the perfect drummer for The Who. "I Can See For Miles" from "The Who Sell Out"

Greg Sowders - The Long Ryders - I'm sure you're going "who" here as well. The Long Ryders were and are an excellent American Roots group and to me Sowders' drums almost sounded like riffs as they just totally power the group along. "Run Dusty Run" from "Two Fisted Tales"

Charlie Watts - The Rolling Stones - Forget Keith the Riff. Without Charlie, there is no Rolling Stones sound."Honky Tonk Woman" from any Greatest Hits Album

BJ Wilson - Procol Harum His Majestic beat and Matthew Fisher's Hammond Organ made thier sound. "The Devil Came to Kansas" from "A Salty Dog Returns"

Exercize Your Body & Spirit Through Fiddling

Treadmill. Rowing-machine. Thigh-Master. Violin?

So many of us hope to keep in shape with home exercise equipment, but quickly lose interest and focus. I have best intentions in maintaining my daily dose of sit-ups with my goofy exercise gadget, but, alas, the tummy trimmer sits gathering dust in my closet.

Enter the violin. Recognized by its ornately feminine shape and sweet tone, the violin is the worlds most perfect instrument. Fiddling has been a favourite past-time and passion for thousands of musicians for over 300 years. It brings joy and delight to all and is often depicted being played by a beautiful angel.

As described in the film The Red Violin, the violin is a perfect marriage of science and art. Known as the intellectualists instrument, many of the great minds of our time have taken up the fiddling, such as Einstein, Sherlock Holmes and yours truly. Kidding aside, playing violin can greatly enhance concentration, coordination, and mental focus and is wonderfully soothing to listen to. In fact, violin is the instrument of choice among music therapists.

As well as being rewarding for your mind and spirit, recent studies show that it is also physically beneficial. One hour of violin playing can burn 177 and 216 calories. The number of calories burned during 1 hour of playing violin is comparable to 1 hour of walking, horseback riding, housecleaning, American bowling (with the big balls) or surfing. A big pro here is that one cannot DIE from playing violin, whereas the other activities mentioned can lead to certain injury or death, housecleaning included.

Sure a good fiddle will set you back over $1200, but unlike the Solarplex machine, it will appreciate in value and is a much more attractive addition to your home. Of coarse the exact number of calories burned depends on the shape of the player and how much shes getting into the music! You could say a scale would burn far less calories than Devils Dream or a Bach Partita at 160 BPM.

Unlike exercises where the participant is merely strengthening muscles, playing violin is a complete exercise for mind, body, and spirit. It differs from exercise for the sake of health or stress relief, says Harry L. Mills, PhD.D. In his book, Physical Actualization, Dr. Mills focuses on the experience of physical activity.

Mills says playing requires tremendous physical skills. Somewhere behind the physical actualization is a drive toward self-expression through disciplining the body. The actualization process involves the whole person, making it a total experience.

This fresh new look on exercise is apparent in health journals everywhere. Playing a musical instrument (violin and cello in particular) is recommendation #15 in the Diabetes Self-Managements 100 Tips for a Healthier Life.

Once more people discover this little exercise secret and turn to the violin, we flabby fiddle teachers will be in the best shape (other than round) ever!
